BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Nazareth's men's track and field team finished fifth overall after the second day of the Empire 8 Track and Field Championships at Brockport on Saturday. Several Golden Flyers finished with personal bests in their respective events. Junior
Jack Pomykaj took first and recorded a personal best in the decathlon.
Nazareth finished fifth with 61 team points. Geneseo took first with 303.5 points, followed by Brockport with 199 points, St. John Fisher in third with 104 points, and Utica in fourth with 94.5 points. After the Golden Flyers, Houghton was sixth (42 points), Alfred was seventh (25 points), and Hartwick and Sage tied for eighth (13 points apiece).
After the first five events of the decathlon on Friday, Pomykaj trailed Geneseo's Daniel Pagan by 154 points. Following his performances on Saturday, Pomykaj finished with 6,173 points, which outscored Pagan by 68 points. Pomykaj opened the day with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.72 seconds) and also took first in the pole vault with a height of 4.45 meters (14' 7 ¼"). He was third in the javelin with a throw of 39.83 meters (130' 8") and finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 25.87 meters (84' 10"). In the final event, the 1500-meter run, Pomykaj secured first overall when he finished second in the event with a time of 4:56.62. Pomykaj's score of 6,173 ranks first on Nazareth's Top-10 list, and it is 168 points more than his previous best of 6,005 points that he recorded in May 2024.
Junior
Holden Thomas also competed in the decathlon and finished eighth. Entering the second day in seventh place, Thomas finished with 4,883 points, which surpasses his previous personal best of 4,721 points. On the track, Holden claimed third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.55 seconds) and was sixth in the 1500-meter run (5:26.41). He tied for sixth in the pole vault with a height of 3.15 meters (10' 4"), took seventh in the javelin throw with a throw of 30.89 meters (101' 4"), and finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 23.35 meters (76' 7").
In the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, Pomykaj was sixth with a time of 15.52 seconds. It beats his previous personal best of 15.92 seconds that he recorded April 26th, 2025. Additionally, the time ranks fifth on Nazareth's Top-10 list.
Freshman
Graeden Heichberger finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.18 meters (49' 9 ¾") for a new personal best, which also ranks first on the Golden Flyers' Top-10 list. He recorded his previous best of 14.66 meters (48' 1") on April 18th.
In the 200-meter sprint, senior
Benjamin Lewis placed 10th with a time of 22.48 seconds, which is a new personal best and ranks seventh on Nazareth's Top-10 list. His previous best was 22.61 seconds, which he ran on April 14th. Junior
Solomon McFarlane finished 21st in the event with a time of 23.55 seconds.
Junior
Connor Jackson also had a personal best on Saturday. Jackson finished the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:41.46, which ranks seventh on the Golden Flyers' Top-10 list. Jackson's previous best was 16:02.89, which he recorded on April 12th. Classmate
Cameron Almy joined Jackson in the 5,000-meter run and crossed the line with a time of 16:06.64 to place 14th.
Nazareth had a pair of runners in the 1500 and 800-meter runs. Seniors
Cade Eells (4:02.50) and
Ethan Kenyon (4:07.10) placed 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 1500. In the 800, junior
Gavin McAllister (2:01.07) and sophomore
Cole Hastings (2:01.90) finished in 15th and 18th, respectively.
The Golden Flyers had relays in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter events, and both teams reached the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) standard.
In the 4x100 relay, the foursome of
Mike Welch, Lewis,
Jack Healy, and
Jaylen Savage finished sixth with a time of 43.16 seconds, which ties the time they recorded on April 12th and ranks second on Nazareth's Top-10 list. In the 4x400 relay, consisting of Healy, Lewis,
Michael Puglisi, and Savage placed fourth with a time of 3:22.18.
Senior
Kyle Reid and junior
Jason Marchincin represented the Golden Flyers in the high jump. Reid was seventh with a height of 1.85 meters (6' 0 ¾"), and Marchincin was 15th with a height of 1.65 meters (5' 5").
In the triple jump, junior
Adam Reifsteck finished fifth with a mark of 13.40 meters (43' 11 ¾").
Additionally, sophomore
David Dobrowolski placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 37.61 meters (123' 4").
Nazareth competes again on May 11th when the Golden Flyers travel to St. John Fisher for the Last Chance Meet.
