LYNCHBURG, VA – A pair of first place finishes, a school record and a great relay finish combined with several personal best finishes leading the Nazareth College women's track and field team to a second place finish at the Dr. Jack Toms Alumni Invitational at Lynchburg University.
Senior Alycia Eaton followed up her first place finish in the long jump Friday night with a first place finish in the triple jump Saturday. She won the triple jump with a final distance of 11.13 meters.
Freshman Ally Criswell placed 3rd in the hammer throw and set a new Nazareth school record with her throw of 40.48 meters.
Junior Maria Staehr capped the meet with a great anchor leg run in the 4x400 relay as she overcame a 20-yard deficit and raced past the final runner for Christopher Newport to capture second place in the relay and move Nazareth to a point ahead of the Captains in the team standings.
Lynchburg won the team title with 236 points while Nazareth took second with 108 and Christopher Newport was third with 107 points. Southern Virginia (75 points) was fourth followed by Washington and Lee (59.5), Eastern Mennonite (30), Mary Baldwin (26), Virginia-Lynchburg (19), Regent (16), William Peace (16), Randolph (12.5) and Guilford (5).
Staehr anchored the relay that also featured Brenna Johnson, Lydia Dewart and Eaton as they finished with a 4:17.83. The relay with Kelly Artini, Kaitlyn Dobbertin, Deirdre Brett and Hayley Cronin took 4th place.
Brett was 3rd and Dobbertin was 7th in the 1500-meter run, Staehr was 3rd and Claire Bargabos was 12th in the 400-meters and Johnson was 3rd with Madison Sabourin finishing 5th in the 100-meters. Artini was 4th in the 800 while Abbey Szumloz was 4th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Lauren Guilfoil took second in the 3K steeplechase and Sara Thomas was second in the triple jump for the Golden Flyers. The relay of Sabourin, Johnson, Kathleen Irwin and Juliana Bunnell finished 3rd in the 4x100 while Sarah Smith was 7th in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Nazareth throwers also scored points and finished well as Bailey Robinson (8th), Grace Blankenberg (11th), Kaitlin Ange (19th) and Gabrielle Pighetti (21st) finished behind the record-breaking performance of Criswell in the hammer throw. Pighetti led Nazareth with a 12th place finish in the shot put as Criswell (16th), Blankenberg (21st), Robinson (24th) and Ange (31st) also finished strong. Criswell added a 10th place and Ange a 17th place finish in the javelin.
The Golden Flyers will compete next weekend in the Geneseo Invitational March 30.
