Morse Takes Fifth in Pole Vault at NCAA Outdoor Champs; Luba Sits in 10th For Heptathlon

La CROSSE, WI – Senior Isabel Morse delivered a personal best height of 4.0 meters (13'1 ½") in the pole vault to earn fifth place and First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The fifth-place finish is the highest NCAA finish outdoors in Nazareth's program history on the women's side. Samantha Luba competed in the first four events on Thursday of the heptathlon, setting two personal bests in the high jump and shot put, and sits in 10th place with 2,877 points.

How it Happened:
  • Morse came into the championship ranked 14th in the pole vault with a then personal best height of 3.92 meters (12' 10 ¼") set back at the Empire 8 Championships on May 1.
  • The starting height for the championships was 3.60 meters (11'9 ¾"), followed by 3.75 meters (12' 3 ½"), each of which Morse cleared on the first attempt.
  • Morse missed the first attempt at 3.85 meters (12'7 ½") before conquering it on the second chance.
  • The senior dug down deep to set a new personal best at the 3.95 meter height (12'11 ½"), successfully clearing on the third attempt. She then set another personal best and advanced her own school record to 4.0 meters (13'1 ½") by also clearing on her final attempt to guarantee a top 6 position.
  • She was unable to clear 4.05 meters (13 3 ½"), but locked up fifth place.
  • Luba, who came into the heptathlon ranked 17th out of 22 athletes, started the event strong, taking 8th place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.75) to collect 875 points. 
  • She recorded a personal best in the high jump at 1.56 meters (5' 1 ¼"), nailing her third and final attempt to earn 12th place. She also stayed in the competition at the 1.50 meter height (4'11") by clearing on her third attempt.  
  • Luba also smashed her personal best in the shot put with a throw of 10.13 meters (33'3"), well past her previous mark of 9.75 meters (32'0") to take 14th place.
  • She finished the day with a 26.26 in the 200-meter dash to take 12th place.
 
Up Next:
Luba will compete in the long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter run on Friday to conclude the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor Championships.
