UTICA, NY – The Nazareth women's track and field team won its first-ever Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday, finishing with 212 points, 13 ahead of runner-up St. John Fisher. Graduate student
Brenna Johnson was named the Track Athlete of the Meet after winning the 100, turning in runner-up performances in the 200 and 400, and being part of the winning 4 x 400-meter relay to close out the meet. She was also part of the 4 x100-meter relay that was second.
Nazareth finished with 212 points, Fisher with 199, and Utica was third with 108.
With the win, Nazareth completes the sweep of both the indoor and outdoor Empire 8 Championships, each being the programs first.
Johnson set the school record in the 100-meter dash at 12.19 seconds to take first place. She was also second in the 200-meter dash in personal best time of 25.58.
The icing on the cake came in the final event, the 4 x 400-meter relay, as Johnson,
Shiana Susa,
Abbey Szumloz, and
Lauren Bendall set the facility record in a regional qualifying time of 4:07.57, nearly five seconds ahead of St. John Fisher.
The Golden Flyers picked up 17 points, going 2, 3, 5, 6 in the 400-meter hurdles. Susa ran personal best time 1:08.05 to lead the way, followed by Szumloz (1:08.58), Bendall (1:11.47) and
Samantha Luba (1:12.31).
In field action, the Golden Flyers went 1, 2 in the triple jump.
Isabella Heath was the champion with a jump of 11.27 meters (36 feet, 11 3/4 inches), while
Hannah Ragule notched a mark of 11.26 meters (36 feet, 11 1/2 inches).
To open the meet, the 4 x 100-meter relay of Johnson, Ragule, Susa, and
Alaina Morley took second place in a season best and regional qualifying time of 49.53. That is also the third fastest time in school history.
Senior
Sydney Vanderhoof had a nice showing in the 100-meter hurdles, earning third place in a time of 16.34.
Ella Impaglia took third in the 800-meter run at 2:25.91 for six points and was fourth in the 1,500 (5:00.79).
In the 5,000,
Emily Weaver earned six points with a time of 18:48.60, while
Lilianna Hanning was fourth in 18:53.62. Weaver was also fifth in the 1,500 (5:01.32).
Lea Richard was fourth in the discus, with a toss of 34.03 meters (111 feet, 7 inches). She also earned a point in the shot put with a heave of 10.65 meters (34 feet, 11 ¼ inches).
In the heptathlon, Bendall was third with 3,395 points. She was first in the javelin throw at 26.87 meters (88 feet, 3 inches) and also tops in the 800 at 2:33.99. Freshman
Sydney LaSalle was fifth with 3,109 points, including three third place finishes in the high jump, 200-meter dash, and long jump.
