Eaton Wins a Pair of Events at Season Opening Meet

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Alycia Eaton opened the 2018-19 indoor track and field season with a pair of victories for the Nazareth College women's track and field team as she posted victories in both the long jump and triple jump at the season-opening RIT Early Season Meet.

Eaton won the long jump with a leap of 5.51 meters and then took top honors in the triple jump with a final distance of 11.29 meters.

In addition to Eaton's strong performance, a solid group of freshmen had impressive starts to the season in the throwing events. Gabrielle Pighetti was the top collegiate in the shot put as the Golden Flyers placed five of the top seven college athletes in the event. Pighetti had a throw of 11.35 meters while Ally Criswell was next with a 10.49 throw. Grace Blankenberg (9.80), Bailey Robinson (9.18) and Kaitlin Ange (7.47) finished in 4th, 5th and 7th among college athletes.

Croswell was the top collegiate in the weight throw with a 13.03 toss followed by Blankenberg, Robinson, Pighetti and Ange who all finished in the top six for the Golden Flyers.

Eaton added a win in the 4x400 relay as she teamed with sophomore Abbey Szumloz, freshman Claire Bargabos and junior Maria Staehr with a winning time of 4:19.30. Freshman Sarah Smith took second in the 60-meter hurdles and fellow freshman Brenna Johnson led a group of four Nazareth runners with a second place finish in the 60-meter dash. Freshman Juliana Bunnell, senior Kathleen Irwin and freshman Madison Sabourin finished third, fourth and fifth in the race for Nazareth.

Sabourin added a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash while sophomore Lydia Dewart, Bargabos and freshman Amanda Chuttey placed third, fourth and fifth in the 500-meter race. The 4x200 relay with Johnson, Sabourin, Smith and Bunnell was second overall.

The Nazareth men sent a limited roster of competitors to the event and were led by sophomore William Lewis who finished third in the 200-meters and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Jervon Harrison took seventh in the long jump.

The Nazareth track and field teams will compete next Jan. 18 at the Houghton College Invitational.
