WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Nazareth won the championship of the 2008 Wellesley Invitational Saturday as the Golden Flyers won two more matches, including a come-from-behind five-set triumph over the host school. Nazareth defeated Wellesley by scores of 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-10 to win the title and extend its winning streak to 13 matches.
Nazareth won three matches at Wellesley overall. The Golden Flyers also defeated Skidmore in three sets Friday, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23, and Bridgewater State Saturday in four sets, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19. The Golden Flyers are 21-6 overall.
Against Wellesley (19-5), Nazareth got 15 kills from senior
Laura Persico and 12 kills and five blocks from freshman
Audrey Zimmerman. Junior setter
Kate Zwickl added 47 assists and eight digs and junior
Mallorie Clary had a season-high 24 digs.
Other strong numbers included 10 kills for junior
Katelynn Reed, seven kills for freshman
Elizabeth Fisler, six kills and 13 digs for junior
Carra Vanderstyne and 12 digs and three service aces for junior
Natasha Villane.
In the Bridgewater match, Persico, Reed and Vanderstyne each posted 10 kills and Zwickl amassed 44 assists. Clary had 18 digs, while Vanderstyne and freshman
Leah Farrell each had 10.
Nazareth plays again Tuesday at Fredonia in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
