Women’s Volleyball Outlasts Alfred in Five Set Thriller

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (nazathletics) - Nazareth Women's Volleyball (3-22, 3-7) defeated Alfred (12-16, 4-6), 3-2, Friday night inside Kidera Gymnasium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Nazareth edged out a tight opening set, pulling away late for a 25-22 win. Strong play at the net and steady serving helped the Golden Flyers close on a 3-0 run. The win set the tone for the match.
  • The Golden Flyers took control early and never looked back in a dominant 25–13 second set. A strong serving stretch and balanced offense kept the momentum rolling. Nazareth hit efficiently and sided out at a high rate to go up 2–0.
  • Nazareth fell behind early in the third and couldn't recover, dropping the set 25–18. A slow start and hitting errors allowed the visitors to stay in front throughout. Despite a late push, the Golden Flyers couldn't close the gap.
  • The Golden Flyers jumped out to an early lead but couldn't sustain it, falling 25–21 in a back-and-forth fourth set. Nazareth's defense kept the score close, but late miscues forced a deciding fifth.
  • Nazareth regrouped with a strong start, racing out to an early lead in the final frame. The Golden Flyers held their composure down the stretch to finish off a 15–12 win. The victory secured a 3–2 match triumph at home.
MATCH NOTES
  • The Golden Flyers tallied a season-high 16 blocks over Alfred, the team's third match in double figures at net. 
  • Alana Lucey recorded a career-high 16 kills at a .333 clip, her third match with double-digit kills this fall. Lucey chipped in six blocks and three digs for a team-best 19.5 points. 
  • Jenna Mattison eclipsed 1,000 career digs with 21 digs against the Saxons, her second outing this season with 20 or more digs. 
  • Sarah Harvey posted a career-best day with 12 kills and nine digs, her first ever match with double figure kills.
  • Leah Fusilli registered her fifth double-double of the season with 18 digs and 11 kills along with a season-high three blocks.
  • Zipporah Sparkman added a personal-best nine blocks in the win, her second contest with five or more blocks this year.
