BIRMINGHAM, AL – Nazareth's two competitors at the NCAA Division III Women's Track and Field Championships,
Brenna Johnson (long jump) and
Lea Richard (weight throw), each placed 17
th in their respective events on Friday. In addition, following her competition in the long jump, Johnson was awarded the
prestigious Elite 90 Award for academic excellence. She becomes the first-ever Nazareth athlete to win the award.
Johnson's best jump of the day came on her very first chance, as she hit the mark of 5.38 meters (17 feet, 8 inches). On her second jump, she went 5.33 meters (17 feet, 6 inches). Knowing she needed a big jump on her final attempt to advance to the finals, Johnson registered a big leap, but unfortunately fouled which left her short of advancing to the finals. She was 17
th out of 20 jumpers. Victoria Kadiri took first overall with a jump of 5.93 meters (19 feet, 5 ½ inches).
The fifth-year graduate students top long jump of the season was 5.66 meters (18 feet, 7 inches) which helped her earn first place at the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Richard, who came into the event ranked 17
th out of 20 competitors, had her best throw on her third and final throw, heaving the weight 16.33 meters (53 feet, 7 inches). On her second throw, the junior had a throw of 15.37 meters (53 feet, 7 ¾ inches). Richard fouled on her first throw of the day.
The strong indoor season for Richard comes to an end after just a week prior, she delivered her best-ever throw, a school record, 17.22 meters (56 feet, 6 inches) at the All-Atlantic Regional meet.
