Nazareth outswims Utica, 194-73

Golden Flyers improve to 3-4

UTICA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth won 13 of 16 events Saturday as the Golden Flyers won for the third time this season in men's swimming and diving with a 194-73 victory over Utica.

The Golden Flyers are 3-4 overall. Nazareth also won the women's meet, 184-92, to improve to 4-3 overall.

In the men's meet, senior Jacob Kline was part of four winning events. He finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.85) and the 200 backstroke (2:04.83) and was part of two winning relays. Nazareth opened the meet by finishing first in the 200 medley relay (1:42.73) with the foursome of Kline, freshman Dan Burke, senior Mike Bidwell and junior Bryan Geary. They ended the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.05) with Kline, Geary, senior Patrick Monachino and freshman Sean Doyle.

Burke also won two races, the 200 freestyle (1:50.65) and the 100 butterfly (:57.22) and placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:17.82). Junior Justin Sawran won the two distance freestyle events. He swam 10:35.35 to win the 1,000 freestyle and 5:11.96 to win the 500. Freshman Jeff Green finished first in 1-meter diving with a total score of 443.15 for 11 dives. The competition was broken up into 5- and 6-dive events beacuse Utica doesn't have a 3-meter board. His total 11-dive score broke Nazareth's school record of 425.85, set by Dave Marsh in 1995.

Other winners were Doyle in the 100 freestyle (:52.45) and junior Tim Rappold in the 200 IM (2:06.44).

In the women's meet, Nazareth dominated the action by winning 15 events, including four involving senior Carissa Risucci. She won the 200 freestyle (2:07.13) and the 200 breaststroke (2:28.88) and was part of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. In the 200 medley relay (1:49.28), Risucci swam with fellow seniors Rachel House, Kelley Anzalone and McKenna Murphy. The 200 free relay (1:48.87) also featured junior Amanda Rogers and freshmen Gabby Gedz and Renee Stromski. Risucci's time in the 200 breast broke Utica's pool record.

Juniors Maura Reissig and Emily Sauter each won two individual events. Reissig captured the 100 breaststroke (1:15.98) and the 100 freestyle (:57.53), while Sauter won the 50 freestyle (:25.19) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.84). Sauter's time in the 50 free broke Utica's pool record.

Other winners were House in the 100 backstroke (1:07.52), freshman Kimberly Pedrotti in the 200 butterfly (2:23.78), junior Marybeth Diego in 1-meter diving (131.50), sophomore Madasyn Smith in the 200 backstroke (2:27.17), Murphy in the 100 butterfly (1:05.60) and junior Karissa Kobel in the 200 IM (2:25.07).

Nazareth closes out its regular season Saturday with a home meet against RIT at 1 p.m.
