ITHACA, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out their first-semester schedules Sunday as both competed at the Bomber Invitational. Paced by a fourth-place finish from freshman
Dan Burke in the 200 backstroke, Nazareth placed eighth in the 11-team field with 431 points. Cornell was first with 1837.5, followed by Ithaca (1080.5), Hartwick (905), Springfield (835), Shippensburg (642), Geneseo (617), Cortland (524.5), Nazareth (431), LeMoyne (353), Colgate (347) and Alfred (303.5).
Burke narrowly missed his second school record in as many days as he placed fourth in the 200 backstroke in 1:54.72. The record of 1:54.56 by Jeff McCormack has stood since 1999. Burke broke McCormack's record in the 100 backstroke on Saturday.
Other top competitors for the Golden Flyers Sunday were
Tim Rappold, who finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.58).
Mike Bidwell place 10th (2:16.62) and
Pat Monachino 22nd (2:23.57) in the same event.
Jacob Kline finished 17th in the 100 freestyle (:48.39) and
Justin Sawran was 19th in the 1,650 freestyle (17:35.76).
In addition, the foursome of Bidwell, Burke,
Bryan Geary and Kline finished 10th in the 400 free relay (3:16.62).
In the women's meet, senior
Carissa Risucci finished second in the 200 breaststroke as Nazareth finished in seventh place in the 11-team field, which included two Division I teams (Cornell and Colgate) and two Division II teams (LeMoyne and Shippensburg).
Nazareth amassed 640 team points. Cornell won the meet with 1648 points. Colgate was next with 1149.5, followed by Geneseo (830.5), Ithaca (713), Springfield (686), Hartwick (650), Nazareth (640), Shippensburg (618), Cortland (450), LeMoyne (307) and Alfred (275).
Risucci posted a time of 2:18.93, just a fraction of a second behind Cornell's Anne Drummond. Risucci was also just over a second off her own school record in the event (2:17.15).
Brittany Friedrich finished 12th in the same race (2:32.22) and
Nicole Charette was 15th (2:33.94).
Other Nazareth highlights included an eighth-place finish for
Emily Sauter in the 100 freestyle (:53.80); a 10th-place finish for
Kimberly Pedrotti in the 1,650 freestyle (18:39.59). Also in the 1,650 was
Emma Dorschel in 11th place (18:41.39);
Renee Stromski in 16th place (19:10.50) and
Chelsea Vosburgh in 19th place (19:36.39).
Maura Reissig was 14th in the 200 backstroke (2:13.96) and she also swam in the 400 free relay that finished 10th in 3:41.44. Sauter,
Karisa Kobel and
McKenna Murphy also competed.
Nazareth is off until Jan. 12 when the Golden Flyers swim at Fredonia.
