Nazareth falls to UR in swimming

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting University of Rochester held off Nazareth in a women's swimming and diving meet Wednesday as the Yellowjackets edged the Golden Flyers, 158-138. UR also won 14 of 16 events in the men's meet for a 190-90 victory.

In the women's meet, Nazareth won 10 of the 16 events, but couldn't overcome a 32-2 point differential in diving. Junior Rachael Phipps was part of four winning events for Nazareth. In addition to winning the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.64) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:01.24), Phipps swam on Nazareth's two first-place relays -- the 200-meter medley relay (2:06.55) and the 800-meter freestyle relay (9:10.20).

Junior Jaclyn Conklin and sophomore Carissa Risucci each were part of three winning events. Conklin won the 50-meter butterfly (:31.36) and the 200-meter freestyle (2:15.65) and anchored the 800-meter freestyle. Risucci won the 50- and 100-meter breaststrokes in :36.75 and 1:19.14 respectively and competed in the 200-meter medley relay.

Other winners were sophomore McKenna Murphy in the 400-meter freestyle (4:48.43) and freshman Emily Sauter in the 50-meter freestyle (:28.53). Murphy also was touched out by Conklin in the 200 free (2:15.89).

Top performers for UR included Val Atwood, who won the 50- and 100-meter backstrokes, and Corinne Lampe, who won the 400-meter Im and the 800-meter freestyle.

In the men's meet, junior Dan Walton won the 100-meter butterfly for Nazareth in 1:03.97 and sophomore Jacob Kline finished first in the 50-meter butterfly for the Golden Flyers' only wins. Walton also placed second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:10.63) and third in the 100-meter freestyle (:58.89).

Kline also finished second in the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.41), while sophomore Mike Bidwell was third in the 100-meter breaststroke and freshman Bryan Geary was third in the 400-meter freestyle (4:39.29).

Winners for UR included Monte Jiran in the 400-meter IM and the 800-meter freestyle; Adam Bossert in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke; Kevin Howard in the 50- and 100-meter backstrokes; and Christian Vu in the 100- and 400-meter freestyles.
