ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's swimming and diving team broke two pool records during Saturday's morning session at the Don Richards Invitational at RIT.
The Golden Flyers surged into second place in the team standings when the evening session was completed. With one more day of swimming, Ithaca is in first place with 740 points, followed by Nazareth (576), Hartwick (442), LeMoyne (397), Alfred (260) and RIT (211).
Sophomore
Carissa Risucci, an All-American last year in the 200-yard breaststroke, won that event Saturday with a pool record and provisional NCAA qualifying time of 2:22.35. Junior
Ashley Palmer was fifth in the same event with a time of 2:36.25. Risucci also finished second in the 100 breaststroke in the evening session with a time of 1:07.02.
Nazareth also won the 800 free relay with a pool record time of 7:59.63. That foursome featured
Rachael Phipps,
Maura Reissig,
Jaclyn Conklin and
McKenna Murphy.
In other events, Reissig was second and
Amanda Rogers was sixth in the 200 backstrokewith times of 2:13.17 and 2:16.53 respectively; Phipps was second (:52.85) and
Emily Sauter sixth (:55.34) in the 100 freestyle; and Conklin was second (2:14.84) and Murphy fourth (2:18.85) and
Rachel House sixth (2:20.72) in the 200 fly.
In the evening session, Nazareth swam third (1:40.37) in the 200 free relay with the team of Phipps,
Holly Gilligan, Murphy and Sauter. Reissig was second and Sauter fifth in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:01.40 and 1:03.02 respectively. Murphy was third (1:59.69),
Amanda Rogers fourth and
Rachel Hayes seventh in the 200 freestyle.
In the closest race Phipps and Conklin went 2-3 in the 100 butterfly as they were touched out by a fraction of a second by Hartwick's Stephanie Ha, who was clocked in :58.46. Phipps went :58.82 and Conklin :58.98. House also finished second in the 400 IM (4:49.81).
In the men's meet, Nazareth remained in sixth place despite several strong swims. Ithaca is first with 694 points, followed by Hartwick with 645, Alfred (437), RIT (377), LeMoyne (296) and Nazareth (241).
The Golden Flyers finished fourth in the 800 free relay (7:26.06) with the team of
Justin Sawran,
Dan Walton,
Mike Bidwell and
Jacob Kline.
Bidwell also placed fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.34); Kline was seventh in the 100 freestyle (:48.93); and Walton was seventh in the 200 fly (2:06.07).
During the evening session, Nazareth finished sixth in the 200 free relay behind Kline, Walton, Bidwell and Hudak with a time of 1:30.23. Kline placed fifth (:54.65) and Walton eighth (:55.85) in the 100 butterfly; Bidwell was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.23) and Swaran sixth in the 400 IM (4:33.45).
