ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Raphael Provencher made 20 of his 25 saves in the final two periods including several huge saves late in the third period to lead the Nazareth Men's Hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Stevenson University and a trip to the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Championship game next weekend at Utica.
No. 2 seed Nazareth (18-7-2) will face top-seed and No. 1 ranked team in the country Utica after the Pioneers scored a dominating 11-0 win over Manhattanville in the other semifinal game Saturday night.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore Jeremy Swartz gave the Golden Flyers a 1-0 lead with a shot from the point 2:52 into the period.
Stevenson (15-10-2) answered five minutes later to knot the game at 1-1 but the combination of twin brothers Liam Quinlivan and Anthony Quinlivan used a quick pass and a goal to regain the lead for Nazareth just 25 seconds later.
Later in the period, Stevenson tied the game again on a controversial goal as the on-ice officials originally ruled that Provencher had covered the loose puck in the goal crease, but the goal judge was called for a decision and ruled the puck had crossed the line and the teams went into the second intermission tied at 2-2.
Midway through the third period, senior Henry McKinney made a pass to the point and sophomore Josh Dressler sent a blast from the blue line that was deflected into the goal by freshman Blake Frost and Nazareth led 3-2 with 11 minutes left in the game.
With time running out, Stevenson pulled its goalie for the extra attacker but McKinney was able to steal the puck near the defensive blue line and sent a shot the length of the ice into the empty net for the final score.
