UTICA, NY – After scoring the first goal of the game, the Nazareth Men's Hockey team surrendered four straight goals before battling back before eventually falling short as Utica University scored a 5-3 win Saturday night to win the United Collegiate Athletic Conference (UCHC) Tournament title.
Graduate student Michael DiSchiavi scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Nick Charron to give the Golden Flyers (18-8-2) an early 1-0 lead.
Nazareth took the 1-0 lead into the second period before Utica (25-2-1), ranked No. 1 in the country, tied the game in the first two minutes of the period.
Later in the stanza, the Pioneers rattled off three goals in a span on seven minutes to take a 4-1 lead with 4:14 left in the period.
Freshman Blake Frost started the comeback for Nazareth with a goal off a pass from senior Henry McKinney and the score was 4-2 after two periods of play.
Midway through the third period freshman Logan Tobias notched his team-leading 20th goal of the season to trim the gap to just a goal at 4-3 with eight minutes remaining in regulation. McKinney picked up his second assist of the game on the play.
With just 1:01 left to play, Utica broke free to score its fifth goal of the game and extend the lead to 5-3 and held on for the win.
McKinney and Tobias were named to the All-Tournament team for the Golden Flyers.
