Power Plays Power Utica Past Men’s Hockey Saturday

ROCHESTER, NY – A total of five penalties that led to a pair of power play goals for Utica University Saturday helped the top-ranked Pioneers to a 4-1 win to complete a two-game home-and-home sweep over the Nazareth Men's Hockey team in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action.

Nazareth (11-6-2 overall, 9-4-1 UCHC) struck first as senior Henry McKinney scored midway through the first period to give the Golden Flyers the early advantage.

The lead held for the remainder of the first period and into the second before Utica, ranked No. 1 in the latest USCHO.com poll, scored to tie the game just 1:11 into the second period.

A power play goal later in the period gave Utica a 2-1 lead after Nazareth had killed off the previous three penalties.

After a five-minute charging penalty near the end of the second period that carried over to the third period, the Pioneers scored two more goals to extend the lead. The first, less than a minute into the final period, was during a 4-on-4 situation and the second, less than three minutes later was near the end of the long power play opportunity.

Nazareth, who is in the also receiving votes section of the national poll, battled late in the period with a power play and an extra attacker with the net empty but could not narrow the gap.

Junior Matt Sayles made 20 saves including 11 in the second period for Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers Wilkes at home next weekend in a two-game UCHC series.
