ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's hockey team picked up two points on Friday night at Bill Gray's Iceplex with a shootout victory over Manhattanville on
Blake Frost's fifth-round winner.
Logan Tobias added a pair of goals in Nazareth's first home game in over two months (November 12
th), including the game-tying goal in the third period to help send the game into overtime.
Henry McKinney finished the game with three assists and now leads the Golden Flyers with 12 for the season.
Nazareth moves to 8-4-2 on the season and 6-2-1 in league play after Friday's contest, while Manhattanville falls to 6-8-2 and 5-5-1, respectively.
Trailing 4-3 with 6:45 remaining in the third period, Tobias netted his second of the day and eighth of the season to even the score.
Joey Schaefer sent a pass in front that Tobias was able to get just enough on to beat the Valiants goaltender.
The Golden Flyers dominated the 3-on-3 overtime period with a 6-1 edge in shots, including going on a power play, but were unable to net the game-winner. That sent the game to a best-of-3 shootout.
After the Valiants scored on their first shooter,
Nick Charron cashed in on his shootout opportunity. With neither squad scoring their next two shots, the shootout transitioned to the best-of-1. Following a pair of missed shots in the fourth round and another miss by the Valiants in the fifth, Frost was able to send the Purple and Gold home with the shootout win. The lefty carried the puck wide down the right side, threw in a couple of fakes down the middle, and then wristed it past the goaltender glove side.
In the opening period, Manhattanville took advantage of a powerplay opportunity six minutes in to take a 1-0 lead before Nazareth scored the next two tallies.
Less than three minutes later,
Ethan Louisos notched his fourth of the year, directly putting home a face-off win from McKinney.
Nazareth took advantage of a 4-on-3 opportunity with under seven minutes in the period on a beautiful passing sequence, ending with a goal from
Jeremy Swartz. Assists were credited to McKinney and
Ryan Turse.
The Valiants added another goal late in the period to bring the score to 2-2.
Each team added a goal in the second period, Nazareth's coming from a great individual effort from Tobias. After a faceoff win, Tobias skated the length of the ice, splitting several defenders, eventually cutting in for a backhand goal on the power play. Swartz and McKinney picked up assists on the goal.
The Golden Flyers finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play, while Manhattanville was 2-for-3.
Matt Sayles made 18 saves in net while the Valiants got a strong effort from Sebastian Woods who stopped 37 shots.
Nazareth and Manhattanville will square off again on Saturday at 4 p.m.
