UTICA, N.Y. –
Brenna Johnson reached a personal indoor best in the long jump Friday to lead Nazareth on the first day of competition at the Empire 8 Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships that are being contested at the Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
Johnson leaped 5.66 meters (18 feet, 7 inches) to win that event and secure 10 team points for the Golden Flyers, who stand in second place with 58.5 points. St. John Fisher leads the seven-team competition with 87 points. Utica (30), Houghton (27.5), Alfred (10), Russel Sage (3) and Hartwick (1) are also involved. The competition concludes Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
Johnson was a multiple-event competitor for the Golden Flyers as she also placed third in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of :58.90 and she broke the school record in the 60-meter dash with a prelim time of 7.89. The finals for that event are Saturday.
Nazareth secured 15 team points in the 5,000-meter run as
Emily Weaver finished second (18:49.72),
Megan Morin third (18:53.18) and
Lilianna Hanning sixth (19:10.37).
Anna Ahlquist gained 10 team points by winning the pole vault by clearing 3.67 meters (12 feet, 1/4 inch).
Lauren Bendall finished fifth in the same event (2.60 meters / 8 feet, 6 1/4 inches).
Other top performers included
Claire Bargabos, who ran fourth in the mile with a personal-best time of 5:25.54;
Lea Richard, who had a personal-best throw in the shot put (11.35 meters / 37 feet, 3 inches) to finish fifth;
Sarah Merriwether, who finished fifth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 5.16 meters (16 feet, 11 ¼ inches); and
MacKenzie Gilligan, who has the second best time in the 60-meter hurdles (9.52) heading into Saturday's final.
Abbey Szumloz and
Sydney Vanderhoof also ran the hurdles and stand seventh and eighth respectively with times of 9.99 and 10.05 respectively. Szumloz also was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best clocking of 1:00.78.
The distance medley relay foursome of
Alexis Anagnostopulos,
Isabella Heath,
Leigha Gould and
Paige Ackley placed third in 13:33.82.
