ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore
Nathan Bowers finished first in the 10,000-meter run Friday for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers participated in the first day of competition at the Empire 8 Conference Track and Field Championships at St. John Fisher.
With competition resuming Saturday, Nazareth is in third place in the team standings with 40 points. St. John Fisher is first with 86 points, followed by Houghton (45), Nazareth (40), Utica (35), Russell Sage (6) and Alfred (5).
Bowers posted the second fastest time in Nazareth history with a clocking of 32:53.89. He was joined in that race by freshman
Ethan Glashauser (4th, 33:28.48) and senior
Michael Brown (5th, 33:29.10).
Other top performers included sophomore
Mike Welch, who finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.96. He also qualified for Saturday's 100-meter final with a time of :11.53.
Nazareth also finished second in the 4 x 800-meter relay (8:22.52) with the foursome of
Patrick Healy,
Lucas Sharron,
Kenny Williams and
Josh Tomaka.
Senior
Christopher Celecki was third in the 3,000-mter steeplechase (10:09.30); junior Matt Johnson was sixth in the long jump (20 feet, 9 1/4 inches); and junior
Christopher Perez was seventh in the hammer throw (127 feet, 8 inches).
Sophomore
Connor McCauslin, the top seed in the 110-meter hurdles, competed in a driving rain and stumbled near the finish line and did not qualify for Saturday's finals.
