PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Junior
Brenna Johnson, taking advantage perhaps of unseasonably tropical temperatures Thursday, leaped to a third-place finish in the long jump to lead the Golden Flyers' track and field teams at the All-Atlantic Region Outdoor Championships at St. John Fisher's Polisseni Track and Field Complex.
Johnson recorded a personal-best leap of 5.76 meters (18 feet, 10 3/4 inches) to earn six team points for the Golden Flyers, who finished in 19th place with 10 team points. Geneseo won the team title with 149 points. Ithaca (95) was a distant second and Brockport (70) finished third. Thirty-four schools had athletes competing.
Johnson also qualified for next week's NCAA Division III Championship meet at Greensboro, N.C. Johnson's jump ranks 13th nationally to place her in the 19-person field for next week's meet. An official announcement will be released by the NCAA on Friday. She was just a half inch shy of Nazareth's school record of 18 feet, 11 1/4 inches, set by Aly Eaton in 2018.
"It was an ideal day for long jumping," said Nazareth Coach
James Goss. "What makes her performance more impressive is that she's only been jumping for about three weeks."
During the long jump competition, Johnson exceeded 18 feet on three of her six jumps with the third-place leap coming on her fifth attempt. Johnson also competed in the 200-meter dash and finished in 18th place with a time of :26.33.
Other Nazareth competitors on Thursday included senior
Abbey Szumloz, who finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.59) to earn one team point. Junior
Gabrielle Pighetti finished 12th in the shot put with a distance of 10.74 meters (35 feet, 3 inches) and junior
