GENESEO, N.Y. -- Josh Pomerleau and Bryce Florian finished 1-2 in the pole vault and Connor McCauslin picked up where he left off during the indoor season with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday as Nazareth opened its outdoor track and field season at the Geneseo Invitational.
Absent their distance runners, who will be competing next Friday at the Empire 8 Conference cross country championships, the Golden Flyers managed to score 46 team points to finish in third place in the team standings, behind Geneseo (248) and Brockport (173). St. John Fisher (37) and Fredonia (33) also competed.
Pomerleau cleared 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11 1/4 inches) to win the pole vault. Florian was second at 3.95 meters (12 feet, 11 1/2 inches). McCauslin went 15.05 to win the hurdles. He also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (:11.49). Sophomore Mike Welch was sixth in the 100 (:11.51) and second in the 200 (:22.81). Arthur DeVasto was fourth in the high jump at 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8 3/4 inches).
In the women's meet, Nazareth also placed third with 67 points to finish short of Geneseo (255) and Brockport (130). St. John Fisher (51) and Fredonia (19) also participated.
Brenna Johnson paced Nazareth with second-place finishes in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in :12.72 and :26.40 respectively. Junior
Gabrielle Pighetti was third in both the shot put (11.14 meters) and the discus (33.16 meters).
Among Nazareth's other competitors were
Lauren Bendall, who finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.72) and sixth in the pole vault (2.60 meters / 8 feet, 6 1/4 inches);
Abbey Szumloz, who was third in both the 100-meter hurdles (:17.14) and 400-meter hurdles (1:10.72); and
Claire Bargabos, who was third in the 1,500-meter run (5:16.57) and fifth in the 800-meter run (2:26.21).
