ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Brenna Johnson won three individual events and anchored the winning 4 x 400-meter relay for host Nazareth Friday, but the Golden Flyers came up two points short of St. John Fisher in the team standings at the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Golisano Training Center.
The team standings weren't decided until the last event -- the 4 x 400-meter relay -- in which Nazareth placed first for 10 team points, but St. John Fisher was able to secure second place to earn eight critical team points. That left the Cardinals with 160 points, two better than Nazareth at 158. Utica was a distant third with 66 points, followed by Houghton (48), Alfred (41) and Sage (23). Nazareth Coach

The Golden Flyers had several strong individual performances, notably from Johnson, who was named Track Athlete of the Meet after finishing first in the 60-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. Her time of 8.06 seconds in the 60 was just .01 of a second shy of her own school record. She was clocked in :27.35 in the 200 and 1:01.56 in the 400. Freshman
Lea Richard broke her own school record in capturing the weight throw with a toss of 15.11 meters (49 feet, 7 inches). Junior
Gabrielle Pighetti was fifth in the same event at 13.18 meters (43 feet, 3 inches). The same duo competed for Nazareth in the shot put with Pighetti placing third with 11.46 meters (37 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and Richard fifth with 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10 1/4 inches).
Another freshman,
Hannah Ragule, was named Rookie of the Meet after winning the triple jump as she leaped to a personal-best distance of 10.65 meters (34 feet, 11 1/4 inches). Fellow freshman
Isabella Heath was fifth with a distance of 10.00 meters (32 feet, 9 3/4 inches). Ragule also finished third in the long jump at 4.93 meters (16 feet, 12 1/4 inches), fifth in the high jump with 1.42 meters (4 feet, 7 3/4 inches) and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (:10.70).
Decker also sped to a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:25.30. Junior
Claire Bargabos was third in the same event with a time of 2:29.62.
Other top performances included Szumloz with a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (:10.01), a third-place finish in the 200 meters (:28.46) and a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters (1:04.11); Bendall with a third place in the 400 meters (1:03.90) and a fourth place in the pole vault (7 feet, 6 1/2 inches); Decker with a fifth place in the 400 meters (1:04.16); sophomore
Megan Morin with a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (19:23.65); sophomore
