GALLATIN, Tenn. -- Grad student
Stephen Gabel scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half Wednesday to lead Nazareth to a come-from-behind 78-72 men's basketball victory over Edgewood College in the first game of the Music City Classic.
Despite a 22-day gap between games, Nazareth won for the fifth straight time to improve to 7-1 overall. Edgewood, of Madison, Wis., dropped to 3-6 following the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Nazareth concludes its holiday road trip Thursday with another non-conference game against Carroll College of Waukesha, Wis. at 12 noon eastern time.
Gabel's 25 points included a 7-for-11 shooting performance from the field and an 11-for-12 effort from the foul line.
Kevin Underwood came off the bench to score 17 points and
Jonathan Park produced a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Zach Stenglein contributed 11 points and five steals.
The game was close throughout, but Gabel emerged for the Golden Flyers in the closing minutes to rally the Golden Flyers. He hit a turn-around jumper with 1:53 left to give Nazareth the lead for good at 69-68. He then hit a free throw with 1:24 to go, two more with 1:14 left, two more with :26 left and another two with :12 left to give Nazareth a 76-72 advantage. Stenglein added two more free throws with :02 left to seal the win.
Nazareth had a 17-12 lead early in the game as Park scored eight points and Underwood had seven in the first half. Edgewood then used a 28-12 scoring spree to gain a 40-29 advantage with 1:10 left in the half. Nazareth's
Logan Blankenberg hit a three-pointer with :15 left to make the score 40-32 at the break.
A good start to the second half enabled Nazareth to take a 47-46 lead in the first five minutes with Park's basket capping a 15-6 scoring run. Edgewood regained the lead and was ahead until Gabel's basket with less than two minutes remaining.
Nazareth went 29-for-64 (45.3 percent) from the field with three three-pointers. Edgewood went 28-for-62 with seven three-pointers.
