HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's track and field team inched up to fourth place Saturday with the conclusion of the Empire 8 Conference Championships at Houghton College.

Thanks in part to a first-place finish from Alycia Eaton in the triple jump and a second-place run by Deirdre Brett in the 1,500-meter run, Nazareth was able to amass 85 points to finish fourth. Stevens, in its final Empire 8  season, captured the team title with 189 points. St. John Fisher (144) was second, followed by Utica (138) and Nazareth (85). In the men's meet, Nazareth finished in sixth place with eight points. Stevens also finished first with 231 points.

Eaton picked up 10 points for Nazareth by winning the triple jump with a leap of 10.92 meters (35 feet, 10 inches). Sara Thomas finished fifth with a jump of 10.57 meters (34 feet, 8 1/4 inches). Eaton also finished fourth in the high jump by clearing 1.50 meters (4 feet, 11 inches). Thomas was sixth (4 feet, 7 inches). Eaton also ran on Nazareth's 4 x 100-meter relay that finished second (:50.22). Madison Sabourin, Kathleen Irwin and Brenna Johnson also ran.

Johnson excelled for the Golden Flyers with fourth place in the 400-meter dash (:59.59), sixth in the 100-meter dash (:13.32) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (:27.01). She was joined by Lydia Dewart, Abbey Szumloz and Maria Staehr to finish second in the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:08.20).

Brett ran well for Nazareth in the 1,500-meter run in placing second in 4:53.13 and third in the 5,000-meter run (18:51.09) and Staehr was third in both the 400- and 800-meter runs with times of :59.27 and 2:23.65 respectively.

Other point scorers included Kelly Artini with a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:25.89); Szumloz with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.10); Ally Criswell with a fourth-place finish in the discus (36.24 meters or 118 feet, 11 inches); and Hayley Cronin with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (19:05.34).

In the men's meet, freshman Jake Suddaby finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run (15:43.87) and the foursome of Matt Johnson, Jack Wessel, Josh Pomerleau and Patrick Healy finished fifth in the 4 x 400-meter relay (3:38.28).

Other competitors included John Tomaka, eighth in the 1,500-meter run (4:12.91); Johnson, 11th in the 400-meter dash (:52.55) and 10th in the triple jump (40 feet, 7 1/2 inches); Healy, 11th in the 800-meter run (2:02.29); and William Lewis, 12th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.13).
