Nazareth battles to 4-4 tie at Elmira

Golden Flyers close out first semester schedule at 4-4-3 overall

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Host Elmira scored the game-tying goal with just :20 left in regulation time Friday as the Soaring Eagles rallied to a 4-4 tie with Nazareth in an ECAC West hockey game. Freshman Oliver Janzen scored two goals for the Golden Flyers, who closed out their first-semester schedule with an overall record of 4-4-3, including a 3-1-2 mark in conference play. Elmira is 3-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the ECAC West.

With Nazareth leading 4-3 late in regulation, freshman Ryan Walter was whistled for a tripping penalty with 1:58 to go. In addition to going on the power play, Elmira also pulled goalie Sal Magliocco in favor of a sixth skater and the Soaring Eagles finally scored during the 6-on-4 situation as Carter Shinkaruk scored his second goal of the game off assists from Eric David and Jarryd tenVaanholt to tie the score. The teams then went through a five-minute overtime period and the score went unchanged.

In addition to Janzen's two goals, Dominik Gabaj and Justin LaCorte also scored for the Golden Flyers, who used a pair of power play goals in the third period to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead. LaCorte's goal at 8:02 of the third, off assists from Janzen and Ben Blasko, tied the score at 3-3. Then at 12:45, Janzen scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the season with assists from Janzen and James Redman.

Junior goaltender Ed Zdolshek helped keep the Soaring Eagles off the scoreboard as he made a whopping 24 saves in the second period and 11 more in the third and finished with a season-high of 47.

Gabaj opened the scoring for Nazareth just 2:24 into the game as he netted his team-leading sixth goal off assists from Rocky Gruttadauria and Tom Seravalli. Elmira scored just over two minutes later and then added the first goal of the second period to take a 2-1 advantage. Janzen then scored his first goal of the game at 9:29 of the second off assists from Blasko and John Power to tie the game at 2-2.

Elmira regained the lead with just :15 left in the second period as Shinkaruk scored off an assist from Brian Depp.

The Golden Flyers, in their third season of intercollegiate play, were seeking their first-ever victory over the Soaring Eagles in the teams' seventh meeting. Each team was whistled for 10 minor penalties and each went 2-for-7 on the power play. Elmira had a 51-37 edge in shots on goal. Magliocco had 33 saves for the Soaring Eagles.

Nazareth is now off until 2015. The Golden Flyers will compete in the Oswego Tournament on Jan. 2-3. They play nationally ranked St. Scholastica on Jan. 2 at 4 p.m.
