John Power scored his first career goal at 1:48 of overtime Friday to lift Nazareth to a 4-3 victory over St. Scholastica in a non-conference men's hockey game played at Oswego's Marano Campus Center Arena.
Playing for the first time in 28 days, Nazareth improved to 5-4-3 overall and advanced to Saturday's championship game of Oswego's annual PathFinder Bank Tournament at 7 p.m. The Golden Flyers will play host Oswego, a 4-2 winner over Tufts in friday's second game. St. Scholastica, also receiving votes in the national polls from d3hockey.com and USCHO.com, dropped to 7-5-0 overall and will play in Saturday's consolation game at 4 p.m.
Power's goal helped cap a Nazareth rally that saw the Golden Flyers score four of the game's last five goals after falling behind 2-0 early in the first period. In overtime, St. Scholastica attempted to clear the puck out of its zone, but Nazareth defender
Mike Miller saved the puck from going over the blue line and passed to Power for the game-winning shot. Miller's assist was his first point of the season.
Junior defenseman
Don Olivieri scored two goals for the Golden Flyers and senior
Julius Tamasy also scored. Sophomore
Brandon Lane started in goal and made 31 saves.
Steven Phee scored two goals for St. Scholastica, including one at 14:31 of the first period to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Nazareth picked up the pace in the second period and was aided by four Saints' penalties. Just seven seconds into a 4-on-3 advantage, Nazareth scored its first goal as Olivieri blasted home a shot from the left point for his third goal of the season. Tamasy and
Rocky Gruttadauria assisted. The Golden Flyers also had four penalties of their own in the period and were able to weather a 5-on-3 advantage for the Saints after Gruttadauria and
Geoff Bagnall were whistled for minor penalties just seven seconds apart.
Nazareth capitalized again on the power play in the third period as Tamasy netted his second goal of the season off assists from
Ben Blasko and
C.J. Murray at 2:43. Seven minutes later, Olivieri put Nazareth in front for the first time as he fired a shot past Saints goalie Tyler Bruggeman for his second goal of the game with assists from
Scott Andler and
James Redman. Phee then forced overtime for St. Scholastica with an even-strength goal less than four minutes later.
Nazareth then generated the only two shots on goal in the extra period with Power delivering the game-winner. Nazareth had a 36-34 edge in shots overall. Lane's counterpart in goal, Bruggeman, made 32 saves. Friday's game marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams in men's hockey.
