Updated statsITHACA, N.Y. -- Host Ithaca scored the game-winning goal with 2:07 left in the first overtime period Saturday as the Bombers defeated Nazareth, 1-0, in a key Empire 8 men's soccer contest at Ithaca's Carp Wood Field.
The loss drops the Golden Flyers to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8. Ithaca improved to 5-7-3 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play. The Bombers will be the second seed for next week's conference tournament at Stevens. Nazareth can still qualify as the fourth seed if Alfred defeats Utica and Stevens defeats St. John Fisher in conference games later today.
Ithaca had the better of the play in overtime Saturday as the Bombers generated three shots and finally broke the scoreless stalemate and ended the game in the 98th minute when Andrew Coburn headed in a corner kick off the foot of Joseph Dobbins. Nazareth goalkeeper
Diego Abreu had made a save on an Ithaca header by Alex Mischel just minutes earlier.
Abreu also made a key save in the first half on a penalty kick by Ithaca's Brandon Glass in the 31st minute.
Nazareth had seven shots in the game, including three by
Ramez Al-Hebshi, who had the Golden Flyers' best scoring chance when his shot hit the goal post in the 55th minute.
Each team generated six corner kicks. Abreu made three saves and Ithaca's Jordan Gentile had two.
