Men’s Soccer Suffers 2-0 Defeat to St. John Fisher; Enter as 6 Seed For E8s

Rochester, N.Y. – The Nazareth men's soccer team traveled to Growney Stadium for a Wednesday night match against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. The Golden Flyers came up short in what was their last regular season game of the year, losing 2-0 and falling to 7-6-3 overall and 5-5-1 in Empire 8 conference play.
 
Men's soccer will now set their sights on an Empire 8 quarterfinals match on Saturday, November 1. They enter the playoffs as the sixth seed and will travel to Elmira to take on third-seeded Soaring Eagles. The Soaring Eagles defeated Nazareth 3-1 on October 25.

How It Happened
  • Nazareth started the game on the defensive, facing three shots in the first 20 minutes of play with multiple early fouls committed by both teams
  • Senior Gibson Spector broke into the box behind the Cardinals defense in the 28th minute, sending a header over the goal for Nazareth's first shot attempt of the match
  • St. John Fisher broke the tie late in the first half, scoring in the 43rd minute to make it 1-0
  • The shots after 45 minutes of play were 7-2 for the Cardinals, tasking freshman goalkeeper Bryan Tirado with a few tough saves
  • Sophomore Matthew Vera stepped into a shot from 30 yards out and sent it just high of the goal in the 51st minute 
  • In the 65th minute, St. John Fisher doubled their lead to 2-0 
  • The Golden Flyers made a push late in the second half, taking a flurry of shots in the 85th minute that had their opponents scrambling in the box to keep their two-goal lead
  • Freshman Bryan Tirado made five saves on the day and faced heavy pressure from the Cardinals, holding his ground all game
