ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Elmira scored twice in the second half to upend the Nazareth men's soccer team 3-1 on Saturday at Golden Flyer Stadium. Nazareth, who has already clinched a postseason berth, falls to 7-5-3 overall and 5-4-1 in Empire 8 play, while Elmira moves to 8-3-5 and 6-1-3, respectively.
How it Happened
- Nazareth started the game with all six of its seniors, Mahmoud Radwan, Sam Romanosky, Robert Weitzman, Quentin Herrmann, Gibson Spector and Owen Hughes
- Although the Golden Flyers controlled the better of play at the beginning of the game Elmira capitalized in the 15th minute. A blocked shot made its way to the foot of Pietro Gallina who took advantage to make it 1-0
- In the 26th minute, Nazareth had a Golden opportunity as Samuel Burton played an open Tyler Warmington for a one-time shot that was pushed aside by the Elmira keeper
- Off a Romanosky throw into the box in the 36th minute, Zach Scott was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick. Quentin Herrmann took the penalty, but his shot on the ground to the left was saved
- Nazareth was able to even the score in the 41st minute as Quentin Herrmann threaded a diagonal ball to Burton who took a few touches, one past the keeper, and slid home the ball to even the score at 1-1.
- In the second half, nine minutes in Warmington had a beautiful free kick from 25-yard outs that was bending toward the upper 90 but was tipped over the bar
- Shortly after Elmira hit the post on a shot in tight but the score remained 1-1
- The Soaring Eagles converted a free kick play outside the box to take the lead 2-1 in the 57th minute
- A corner in the 75th minute by Elmira was headed in to up the score to 3-1
- Spencer Neil had a point-blank attempt with less than three minutes remaining saved
Game Notes
- Mahmoud Radwan got his first-career start, playing 16:54 and allowing one goal
- Bryan Tirado played 73:06, allowing two goals and making five saves
- Burton now has five goals and is tied for the team lead with Spector and Warmington
