ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Dan Burke was part of two school records for Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers' men's and women's swimming and diving teams began competition at the Upper New State Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca's Acquatics Pavilion.
Burke broke the Nazareth school record in the 200-yard IM by finishing in sixth place with a time of 1:55.35, a couple of ticks better than his prelim time of 1:55.55. Senior
Jacob Kline and junior
Tim Rappold finished 14th and 15th respectively with times of 1:57.09 and 1:57.32. Burke broke Kline's record of 1:56.69 that was set last year.
Nazareth finished the first day of competition in eighth place in the team standings with 97 points. Stevens leads the competition with 397 points with Ithaca a distant second at 290.50. Hartwick is third with 243.50, followed by Union (163), Rensselaer (122), Alfred (107), RIT (98), Nazareth (97), Vassar (69), Sarah Lawrence (43), Skidmore (38), Clarkson (38), Utica (30) and St. Lawrence (28).
Burke, Rappold and Kline were joined by senior
Mike Bidwell in setting a school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.26 in the prelims. That foursome placed seventh in tthe finals with a time of 1:36.28.
In the women's meet, senior
Carissa Risucci placed fouth overall in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.49, beating her time of 2:10.03 from her preliminary round. Senior
Rachel House (2:13.48) finished in 13th and junior
Maura Reissig (2:14.03) finished in 14th place.
The Golden Flyers are fourth in the team standings behind only Empire 8 Conference rivals Ithaca, Stevens and Hartwick. Ithaca has 358.50 points, followed by Stevens with 328, Hartwick with 255 and Nazareth with 193. Union (170), Skidmore (126), Rensselaer (125), RIT (109), St. Lawrence (108.50), Vassar (108), Alfred (105), William Smith (53), Sarah Lawrence (46), Clarkson (28) and Utica (26) are also competing.
Nazareth also placed third in the 200 medley relay (1:48.69) with the team of Reissig, Risucci and juniors
Karisa Kobel and
Emily Sauter. Sauter also finished ninth in the 50 freestyle (:24.32), while Nazareth had three swimmers -- senior
McKenna Murphy, sophomore
Emma Dorschel and junior
Amanda Rogers -- in the consolation finals of the 500 free. Murphy placed 10th (5:14.68); Dorschel was 12th (5:18.50) and Rogers was 13th (5:18.69).
Swimming resumes Friday Thursday morning.
