ROCHESTER, NY – A pair of relays had great finishes and senior Mike Welch earned a regional mark in the 400 meters to lead the Nazareth Men's Track and Field team to a sixth place team finish at the University of Rochester meet Saturday.
Welch took third in the 400-meters with a personal best time of 49.98 and senior Patrick Healy placed fifth in the 1500 with a personal best time of 4:02.36. Sophomore Cade Eells also clocked a PR in the 1500 as he finished sixth with a time of 4:03.74. Senior Nathan Bowers was 10th in the 1500 (4:05.64).
The 4x800 relay placed first for Nazareth with a time of 8:32.77 as sophomore Ethan Kenyon, freshmen Cameron Almy and Antonio Benitez along with junior Ethan Glashauser crossed the line first for Nazareth. The Golden Flyers also had the third-place relay with Bowers, freshmen Aiden Meyer, TJ Lyng and Connor Jackson finishing with a time of 8:57.93.
In addition the 4x400 relay with senior Mike Welch, sophomore Benjamin Lewis, freshman Gavin McAllister and freshman Jaylen Savage took first with a time of 3:24.08.
Nazareth took sixth as a team with 43.5 points. Rochester (172 points) won the event followed by RIT (135), Brockport (105.5), St. Lawrence (78), Geneseo (59) and Nazareth. The Golden Flyers finished ahead of St. John Fisher, Buffalo State, Hamilton, Fredonia, Alfred State, Houghton and Alfred in the team points competition.
The 4x100 relay with freshman John Pomykaj, Lewis, Welch and Savage finished third with a time of 43.34 which the fastest 4x100 at Nazareth since 2016 and the second fastest on the top-five list.
Freshman Holden Thomas captured 5th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.81 and was 11th in the 110 hurdles in 16.48. Fellow freshman Aaron Lund was 9th in the 110-hurdles with his time of 16.18.
Benitez was 8th (10:29.60) and Glashauser was 9th (10:30.31) in the 3K steeplechase while graduate student Josh Pomerleau took 5th (4.16 meters (13' 7 ¾")) and Pomykaj was 6th with the same height cleared in the pole vault.
Sophomore Kyle Reid led a trio of jumpers in the high jump as he placed 7th (1.77 meters (5' 9 ¾")) followed by senior Arthur DeVasto (1.72 meters (5' 7 ¾")) and freshman Jason Marchincin in 10th place with the same 1.72 meter height.
Nazareth will compete at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic next weekend.
