Softball Ends Florida Trip with a Win

NAPLES, FL – Junior Marissa Berghorn was 2-for-4 including a run-scoring single that tied the game and was part of a five-run fifth inning that gave the Nazareth Softball team a lead 6-3 lead as the Golden Flyers downed Emerson College to cap the 10-game Florida Spring Training trip.

Nazareth (5-5) ended the trip with a win after falling 6-4 to Westfield State in the early game Friday.

Against Westfield (5-4), Nazareth scored early with two runs in the top of the first inning but Westfield answered with a run in the first and three more in the second to take a 4-2 lead.  Single runs in the third and fourth innings gave the Owls a cushion.

The Golden Flyers added two runs in the sixth but could not complete the comeback effort.

Junior Cassidy Hoffmier led the Nazareth offense with a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored. Senior Emily Daciw was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

In the Emerson (6-2) win, the teams played a scoreless first three innings and the Lions took the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Nazareth tied the score in the bottom of the frame as Berghorn doubled to score graduate student Sarah Simmons who had reached with a walk.

Emerson regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning but Nazareth put together its biggest inning of the trip in the bottom half.

Freshman Ashley Bell walked to start the inning, stole second and took third on a ground out.

With two outs, Hoffmier doubled to score Bell and freshman Maddy Spakoski followed with a run-scoring single to tie the score.

After Simmons, walked, Berghorn kept the rally going with a single to load the bases.

Junior Megan Pum singled to push two more runs across the plate. Daciw reached on an error to load the bases again and Bell worked the count for a walk to give Nazareth a 6-3 lead with five runs in the inning.

Daciw earned the pitching win to improve to 4-1 as she scattered six hits and struck out three while walking just one in the complete-game win.

Nazareth returns home and is scheduled to face SUNY Brockport at Brockport March 29.
