ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman
Logan Tobias recorded his first-career hat trick to help Nazareth rebound for a 6-3 victory over Wilkes University on Saturday night at Bill Gray's Iceplex. Nazareth fell to the Colonels 2-1 the night before but were able to deliver on the 10
th anniversary celebration for the men's hockey program. Hockey alums and parents came back for the event and 2015 graduate Julius Tamasay and President Beth Paul had a ceremonial puck drop before the game.
Nazareth moves to 12-7-2 overall with the win and 10-5-1 in in UCHC play, while Wilkes drops to 11-8-1 and 7-6 in league play. The Golden Flyers have officially clinched a berth into the eight-team UCHC Championships, beginning with the quarterfinal round Wednesday, February 22.
The hosts scored a pair of goals in the opening period.
Michael DiSchiavi flipped a backhand pass to
Ethan Louisos for a one-time slapper for the first goal of the game less than four minutes in. It was his eighth goal of the season.
Wilkes made it 1-1 less than a minute and a half later on an even strength goal.
Nazareth regained its lead with under eight to play in the period when Tobias showed great patience, holding onto the puck long enough to make the Wilkes goaltender bite, before skating around the netminder for the tally. It was 2-1 after a period of play.
The Golden Flyers picked up a huge goal with less than :30 seconds left in the second period on Tobias second of the day.
Blake Frost led a 2-on-1 rush down the left side and fed a diagonal pass behind to Tobias for the rifle into the back of the net, making it 3-1.
Nazareth had another strong display of passing in the third period, cycling the puck from
Harrison Dumas to
Anthony Quinlivan and capped with a wrist shot of the pipe from
Liam Quinlivan, making the score 4-1.
Tobias registered his third goal of the game on a 4-on-3 power play at with 10:24 left in the contest. He took a pass from
Henry McKinney and roofed a shot past the netminder for the 5-1 cushion. Tobias ranks third in the entire UCHC with 11 goals in conference contests.
The Colonels, however, were able to make the game interesting, scoring two goals in a less than two-minute span to pull within 5-3 with 3:07 to play.
Nazareth was able to hold off the comeback attempt and
Liam Quinlivan netted his second tally of the day on an empty net to close out the scoring.
Raphael Provencher earned the victory with 30 saves in net.
Nazareth returns to action on Friday, hosting Neumann at 4 p.m.
