Elizabeth Decker,
Brenna Johnson and
Lea Richard captured individual titles for Nazareth Saturday to lead the Golden Flyers on day two of the Empire 8 Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Golden Flyers finished in second place in the seven-team, two-day event that took place at the Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
Nazareth scored 152.5 points and was topped only by repeat champion St. John Fisher, which scored 173. Utica was third (81), followed by Houghton (61.5), Alfred (18), Russel Sage (7) and Hartwick (3).
Johnson broke her own school record and set a meet record in winning the 60-meter dash in 7.86 seconds. She also posted a personal-best indoor time of :26.32 in the 200-meter dash to finish fourth. She competed in the high jump as well, finishing fifth (1.51 meters / 4 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and anchored the 4 x 400-meter relay that finished second in 4:05.62.
Abbey Szumloz, Decker and
Lauren Bendall also ran.
Decker was a repeat winner in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.91,
Claire Bargabos also ran the 800 and finished third with a personal-best time of 2:24.91. Richard broke her own school record in winning the weight throw with a heave of 15.76 meters (51 feet, 8 1/2 inches).
Nazareth finished 2-3-4 in the triple jump with
Sarah Merriwether soaring to a personal-best distance of 11.04 meters (36 feet, 2 3/4 inches).
Hannah Ragule finished third (10.92 meters / 35 feet, 10 inches) and
Isabella Heath was fourth (10.86 meters / 35 feet, 7 3/4 inches). Merriwether also excelled in the high jump as she equaled her personal-best at 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1 1/4 inches) to place third. MacKenzie Gillian also cleared 1.56 meters placed fourth. Merriwether was named as Field Athlete of the Meet.
Megan Morin and
Emily Weaver each had personal-best times in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Morin shaved more than 17 seconds off her previous best time with a clocking of 10:51.07. Weaver improved nearly five seconds from her previous best time with 10:56.47.
Gillian and Szumloz competed in the 60-meter hurdles. Gillian was second as she equaled her top time of 9.41 seconds. Szumloz finished fifth at a personal-best time of 9.78.
