ROCHESTER, NY – Four Nazareth College runner placed among the top eight finishers in the 5K race and the 4x800 relay finished second to pace the Golden Flyers Men's Track and Field team at the Cardinal Classic event at St. John Fisher.
The 4x800 team of junior Josh Tomaka, sophomore Nathan McNally, sophomore Lucas Sharron and junior Patrick Healy ran a season-best 8:32.46 to take second place as Nazareth finished less than two seconds away from first after leading the race until the last lap.
In the 5000-meter race, sophomore Nathan Bowers paced Nazareth with a fourth place finish in 15:44.42. Freshman Matt Reimann was sixth, senior Michael Brown was seventh and junior Jake Suddaby was eighth for the Golden Flyers.
Sophomore Connor McCauslin also had a big day for Nazareth as he took eighth in the 200 with a personal best time of 23.00 and he also won the 110 hurdles with a school-record time of 14.85 breaking his own record of 15.05 by nearly .25 second.
Sophomore Mike Welch had a personal best time in the 400 as he finished second with a time of 50.91. Junior Matthew Johnson was seventh in the race with a 52.96.
Welch led off the 4x400 relay and Johnson ran the anchor leg as Nazareth took third with a time of 3:32.08. Freshman Kenny Williams and senior Christopher Celecki ran the middle two legs of the relay.
In the field events, junior Josh Pomerleau was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault as he cleared the 3.95 meter (12' 11 ½") bar and fellow junior Christopher Perez was 14th in the hammer throw with a distance of 33.23 meters (109' 0").
The Cardinal Classic continues Saturday as the women compete and both the men and women will compete Friday at the Brockport Invitational.
