KEUKA PARK, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth shot a blistering 52.7 percent (39-for-74) from the field Friday as the Golden Flyers won for the second straight time in men's basketball with a convincing 96-62 victory over Empire 8 newcomer Keuka.
Nazareth improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Keuka was playing its first game of the season and its first-ever as a member of the Empire 8 Conference.
Nazareth also made 11 three-point baskets from seven different players. Senior
Stephen Gabel led all scorers with 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Jonathan Park came off the bench to added 16 points by going 8-for-10 from the field and senior
Jon Werner contributed eight points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
The game was close for the first eight minutes of so, then Nazareth used a 14-3 scoring run over a six-minute stretch that turned a tenuous three-point lead into a 33-19 advantage with six minutes to play in the half. Gabel and Park each scored four points to fuel the scoring run and
Kobe Bogart hit a three-pointer.
Sophomore
Josh Stenglein nailed a pair of three-pointers and
Dylan Sacco also connected from long distance as Nazareth expanded its lead to an insurmountable 52-29 at the halftime break.
Nazareth was in complete control the rest of the way. Gabel scored eight more points in the second half and Park scored six.
Brendan Broderick also canned two three-pointers.
Nazareth also enjoyed a whopping 54-27 rebounding advantage with 17 boards coming at the offensive end.
The same two teams square off again Saturday at Nazareth at 2 p.m.
