Stephen Gabel erupted ror a season-high 23 points Saturday as host Nazareth knocked off Keuka in men's basketball for the second day in a row. The Golden Flyers led 42-33 at halftime and went on to win 77-65 on Mike Daley Court at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth's second straight double-digit victory over the Wolves enabled the Golden Flyers to improve to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. Keuka, in its first season as a member of the Empire 8, dropped to 0-2. Nazareth also defeated Keuka on Friday, 96-62 at Keuka.
On Saturday, Gabel went 7-for-11 from the field with one three-point basket and 8-for-11 from the free-throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action. He also had a game-high 20 points in Friday's lop-sided win.
Senior
Brendan Broderick came off the bench to play 30 minutes and contributed a career-best 10 points to go with five assists. He made a pair of three-point shots and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Senior
Kevin Underwood also had 10 points.
Saturday's game was closer than Friday's as a Keuka basket by Zayquan Warren with 2:16 left in the first half brought the Wolves within one point, 34-33. Nazareth, however, closed the half by scoring eight straight points to take a 42-33 lead. Isaac nelson and Broderick each nailed three-point shots and Nelson added a pair of free throws to provide the points.
Nazareth then used an 18-5 run to open the second half to break away to its largest lead at 60-36 with 13 minutes left.
Zach Stenglein and Broderick each made three-pointers during the run and Underwood added six points, including four free throws. Nazareth was able to maintain its double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Nazareth's Tuesday home game against Utica has been postponed and rescheduled for March 22 at 7 p.m. That means Nazareth's next game is Friday at home against Houghton at 7 p.m.
