Nazareth routs Keuka, 25-4

Golden Flyers earn first victory

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth dominated visiting Keuka from the opening minutes of Saturday's Empire 8 men's lacrosse game. The Golden Flyerse had 14 different players find the net, led by sophomore Clifford Pollard, senior Jeremy Jacob, junior Tate Martinez, and sophomore Gavin Girardin, who tallied three goals apiece.

With the victory, Nazareth improves to 1-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference contests. Following the loss, the Wolves begin the season 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8.

Freshman Quinn McKercher opened the scoring after receiving a pass from junior Jon Roth 2:01 into the first quarter. After Nazareth won the ensuing faceoff, McKercher found Pollard to extend the Golden Flyers' lead. Following an unassisted goal by Keuka's Connor Cupp, Nazareth scored four consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead at the end of the quarter. McKercher tallied his second of the game to start the scoring run, followed by a goal from Roth and a pair of goals by Girardin. Girardin's second came with just 10 seconds left in the stanza.

Keuka's Will York opened the second quarter with a man-up goal to trim the Golden Flyers' lead to four goals, 6-2. Nazareth answered with a 10-0 scoring run to dominate the rest of the quarter. Martinez scored the first, fourth, and tenth goals of the run, while sophomore Lucas Cobery, Jacob, and Pollard each had two goals during the scoring run. Freshman Quinn Conroy also added a goal midway through the period. Conroy's and Cobery's goals were man-up goals.

Similar to the second quarter, the Wolves scored first in the third quarter before Nazareth reasserted its dominance. The Golden Flyers scored eight consecutive goals spanning the last 11 minutes of the third quarter and opening six minutes of the fourth quarter. Roth opened the run with his second goal of the game, then Jacob scored his third of the game while Nazareth was man-down. Max Popolizio, junior Jon Parinello, freshman Owen White, sophomore Liam Miller, and senior Dakota Allis each scored their first goal of the game during the scoring stretch. In the closing minutes of the contest, sophomore Conor Kelly scored his first goal of the game.

The Golden Flyers dominated Keuka in shots (59-24), ground balls (59-26), and faceoffs (22-10). Nazareth was successful on 18 of its 19 clear attempts while holding the Wolves to 13 of 26. The Golden Flyers scored on each of its two man-up opportunities. Keuka converted on three of its eight chances.

Nazareth used a trio of goalies on Saturday. Senior David Walk started the game and earned the victory with one save and one goal against in 15 minutes of action. Sophomore Carson Pickeral played the second quarter and opening minutes of the third quarter. Pickeral recorded three saves and two goals against. Junior Eric Almquist replaced Pickeral and made four saves and allowed one goal in 26:22.

Jared Hurlbutt started in net for the Wolves and made nine saves while allowing 16 goals in the first half to take the loss. Shaun Murphy played the second half in the Keuka net. He made five saves and allowed nine goals.

Nazareth is in action again Wednesday, March 31st, when the Golden Flyers travel to Alfred to play the Saxons in another Empire 8 contest.
