SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Nazareth's men's basketball pilgrimage to Notre Dame didn't go quite as well as the Golden Flyers had hoped Friday, but Nazareth competed until the end of the Fighting Irish's 87-37 exhibition game victory.
The Golden Flyers misfired on their first 10 shots of the game and struggled shooting the ball overall as Notre Dame had little difficulty outscoring the Golden Flyers. The statistical numbers were equally one-sided with six Notre Dame players scoring in double figures (led by Cormac Ryan's 16 points) compared to no double-digit scorers for the Golden Flyers.
Kevin Underwood scored nine points and passed for three assists and
Zach Stenglein added eight points.
Stephen Gabel had six points and six rebounds.
Jonathan Park had eight points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Nazareth shot just 6-for-38 (15.8%) from the field in the first half, including 0-for-13 from three-point range. That enabled the Irish (19-for-35, 54.3% in the first half) to surge to a 49-13 advantage after 20 minutes.
Nazareth sank three three-pointers in the second half -- one each for
Brendan Broderick,
Jordan Haggard and Gabel -- as the shooting improved a bit, but Notre Dame's offensive firepower was difficult to match up with. Overall, Notre Dame went 34 for 70 from the field (48.6%), with 12 three-pointers in 32 attempts (37.5%).
Nazareth opens its regular-season schedule Nov. 9 at home against Buffalo State in a non-conference meeting.
