ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Playing for the first time in 20 days, Nazareth had difficulty shaking off the cobwebs Friday as the Golden Flyers opened their second-semester men's basketball schedule, falling to St. Mary's College of Maryland, 89-77, in the first round of the Elizabethtown Tournament.
The Golden Flyers dropped to 6-3 overall with the non-conference defeat, while St. Mary's improved to 4-9. Nazareth will play Saturday in the tournament consolation game at 1 p.m.
The Golden Flyers had difficulty getting untracked offensively as they shot just 33.7 percent from the field (28-for-83), including 29.5 percent from three-point range (13-for-44). St. Mary's, meanwhile, made 52.9 percent of its shots (37-for-70) with four three-point baskets.
Stephen Gabel led the Golden Flyers with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Cody Green added 15 points (all on five three-pointers) and
Zach Stenglein had 13 points and five assists.
Nazareth had the lead for a good portion of the first half. The Golden Flyers led 20-13 after a basket by
Jonathan Park with 11:39 left in the half. Later on
Kevin Underwood sank a pair of free throws to put Nazareth up 28-21. The lead grew to eight points, 31-23, following a three-pointer by Green with 6:29 left. St. Mary's, however, rallied to take a five-point halftime lead, 42-37.
In the second half, Nazareth closed to within one point on a couple of occasions, but never regained the lead as St. Mary's pulled away to advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game. Gary Grant led all scorers with 24 points. Miles Gillette added 22.
