Kevin Underwood scored a career-high 22 points and junior
Stephen Gabel combined 16 points with nine rebounds to gain all-tournament team honors as Nazareth defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 87-82, in the consolation game of the Elizabethtown Tournament.
Combined with a 89-77 loss to St Mary's of Maryland on Friday, Nazareth was able to salvage a split of weekend tournament games and stands at 7-3 overall. The Golden Flyers play at Cazenovia Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning home Friday to open their Empire 8 Conference schedule against Houghton.
On Saturday, Nazareth led for most of the game and were up by as many as 13 points in the first half. Penn State Harrisburg, however, rallied in the second half and grabbed a three-point advantage, 54-51, on a three-point basket by Donyae Baylor-Carroll (24 points) with 11:38 to go.Â
Underwood then spearheaded the Golden Flyers' second-half surge as he scored 18 of his points over the final 11:17. A basket and a free throw by Underwood tied the score. Then back-to-back three-pointers by Gabel and sophomore
Zach Stenglein gave Nazareth the lead for good, 60-54, with 9:30 to go. The Golden Flyers regained their double-digit advantage as Underwood and Stenglein each canned a pair of free throws, but Penn State Harrisburg stayed within striking distance and closed to within two points, 81-79, on a basket by Nate Curry with 1:45 left.
Gabel scored on Nazareth's next possession and Stenglein nailed four more foul shots in the closing minute to preserve Nazareth's win.
Stenglein went 9-for-11 from the foul line overall and finished with 17 points to go with five steals and three assists. Senior
Cody Green scored 15 points -- all in the first half as Nazareth led 42-38. Nazareth trailed late in the half, but freshman
Kobe Bogart sank a pair of three-point shots in the closing minute to give Nazareth the edge at the break.
