ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Kevin Underwood finished with 12 points including a key layup and two free throws in the closing minute as the Nazareth College men's basketball team used a late run to hold on for an 80-76 win over Hartwick College Friday night in an Empire 8 game on Mike Daley Court at Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth (12-4 overall, 4-1 E8) had led by 10 points at 72-62 after sophomore Jonathan Park converted a three-point play with a dunk and a free throw at the 6:05 mark of the second half.
Hartwick (11-6, 3-3 E8) battled back with a 12-2 run to knot the score at 74-74 with 1:22 left on the clock.
On the next possession, Underwood drove the lane and hit a lay up to regain the lead for the Golden Flyers. After a steal at the other end by junior Stephen Gabel, Underwood was fouled and connected on a pair of free throws to extend the lead to four points at 78-74 with 30 seconds remaining.
The Hawks hit an inside shot with 16 seconds left but junior Zach Stenglein added two more free throws to keep it a two possession game with 12 seconds on the clock as Nazareth closed out the home victory.
Senior Cody Green had a team-best 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 6-for-8 from 3-point range. Park and Underwood added 16 and 12 points respectively off the Nazareth bench while Gabel finished with nine points and a team-best eight rebounds. Stenglein had seven points and five assists.
The Golden Flyers will play Elmira Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at Kidera Gym.
