ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Brenna Johnson had a pair of seventh place finishes and also helped the sprint medley relay finish first as the Nazareth College women's track and field team opened the 2019-20 season by hosting the Nazareth Alumni Meet in the Golisano Training Center.
The non-team scoring meet was the first-ever meet in the new facility.
Johnson teamed with fellow sophomores Madison Sabourin and Claire Bargabos and graduate student Eileen Shea to post a school-record time of 4:37.26 to win the event and improve the school record by nearly 10 seconds.
Johnson went on to finish seventh in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.21 seconds. Her 8.12 time in the qualifying round broke the school record by .01 seconds. She also placed seventh in the 300-meter run as she finished first in the fourth heat with a time of 43.19 which broke the school record that was set by Hannah Brackley (43.55) back in 2012.
Bargabos added a 5th place finish in the 600 meter race with a 1:48.62 and Shea was 4th in the mile finishing just behind freshman Gabrielle Larsen who was 3rd with a time of 6:05.22.
Larsen was also the lead runner in the 4x400 relay that finished 8th for Nazareth. She teamed with fellow freshmen Mackenzie Carney and Megan Morin as well as Elizabeth Decker in the race. The team of juniors Kelly Artini, Abbey Szumloz, sophomore Erin Reyner and junior Deirdre Brett was 9th in the relay.
Artini and Szumloz were also part of the 2nd place sprint medley team with sophomore Juliana Bunnell and freshman Sarah Merriwether.
Merriwether added a 5th place finish in the high jump while junior Kaitlyn Dobbertin was 3rd in the 1000.
In the throwing events, sophomores Gabrielle Pighetti and Grace Blankenberg had solid finishes as Pighetti was tied for 3rd in the shot put and 12th in the weight throw while Blankenberg was 7th in both events.
Nazareth is off until after the holiday break and will compete next at RIT Tiger Invite January 18.
