ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Rachel Benedict recorded yet another double-double – her fifth in six games this season – as host Nazareth handed Hamilton its first women's basketball loss of the season, 50-37, Tuesday at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Benedict had game highs in points (15) and rebounds (19) as Nazareth improved to 5-1 overall. Hamilton dropped to 4-1 with the non-conference defeat. Benedict's 19 rebounds equaled her career high that she set in Nazareth's last game, a win over Rochester Saturday.
Isabella Gjonaj added season-high 12 points and
Jadyn Abrams had a career-high 10 rebounds.
Nazareth led 28-19 at halftime, but Hamilton closed to within 38-31 after three quarters. Nazareth then pulled away by outscoring the visitors 12-6 in the fourth quarter.
Nazareth held Hamilton to 26.2 percent shooting for the game (16-for-61), including 1-for-16 from three-point range. Nazareth also enjoyed a 51-36 rebounding advantage.
Benedict's double-double came in the first 20 minutes with 10 point and 10 rebounds. The Golden Flyers made 11-of-25 first-half shots (44%), but were plagued by 12 turnovers.
In the fourth quarter, Hamilton closed to within four points, 39-35, with seven minutes left, but the Continentals managed just one field goal the rest of the game. Nazareth countered with baskets by
Lizzie Straub, Benedict and Gjonaj to push he lead back to double digits at 45-35. Another basket by Gjonaj, a free throw from
Kristen Simmons and two from Benedict closed out the scoring.
Nazareth shot 18-for-53 from the field (34%) and 5-for-17 from three-point range. Gjonaj finished with four blocks and two steals in addition to her 12 points.
Nazareth is home again Tuesday for a non-conference game against Fredonia at 5 p.m.
