ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Host University of Rochester rallied from a one-point halftime disadvantage Saturday to defeat Nazareth, 77-56, in the second game of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at the University of Rochester Palestra.
In a battle of unbeaten teams, UR came out on top to improve to 5-0 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 4-1. Nazareth also defeated RIT Thursday in the first round of the tournament.
In the end, Nazareth had few answers for tournament MVP Ryan Algier, a 6-foot-9 senior for the Yellowjackets, who posted game highs in points (33) and rebounds (13). He went 13-for-17 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. He also had five assists. Nazareth was represented on the all-tournament team by senior
Cody Green (14 points) and junior
Stephen Gabel (10 points).
Nazareth played well in the first half and led by as many as 11 points, 26-15, following a basket by
Kevin Underwood with 4:26 left. The Golden Flyers were able to limit UR to just one field goal over an eight-minute stretch, but UR closed the half with a 12-2 scoring run to make the score 28-27 Nazareth at the half.
Algier went to work in the second half as he scored 25 of his points as Rochester pulled away for their sixth straight win over the Golden Flyers in men's hoops. UR outscored Nazareth 50-28 over the final 20 minutes. All-tournament team selection Kailan Lee added 15 points and Patrick Benka had 11.
Green's 14 points included four three-point baskets. Nazareth went just 9-for-25 from the field (36.0%) in the second half with just two three-pointers. UR, meanwhile, shot 17 for 26 over the final 20 minutes (65.4%).
Nazareth returns to action Tuesday for a non-conference home game against Oswego at 7:30 p.m.
