NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Second-ranked Nazareth was pushed the the brink Sunday, but the Golden Flyers won two more men's volleyball matches at the Baruch Invitational to keep their perfect record intact at 14-0. Nazareth swept 10th-ranked Rivier in three sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-22) and then rallied to defeat ninth-ranked Baruch in five sets (16-25, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24, 15-9).
At 14-0, the Golden Flyers remain the only unbeaten volleyball team in either Division I or Division III. Nazareth also defeated Emmanuel and Kean on Saturday.
"We're very happy to come away from this weekend with four wins," said Nazareth Coach
Cal Wickens. "The guys worked hard and did what they needed to do."
After winning two of the first three sets against the Golden Flyers, Baruch was poised for an upset win as the Bearcats led 24-22 in the fourth set. A kill by Nazareth freshman
Tim Zyburt sliced the deficit to 24-23, then Nazareth earned three straight points on a ball handling error and a pair of attack errors by Baruch to prevail in the set 26-24.
In the decisive fifth set, Zyburt had three kills and sophomore
Luke Lawatsch had two to enable Nazareth to forge a 6-3 lead. Baruch could not recover as Zyburt added two more kills and senior
Robert Kraft produced two others as Nazareth pulled away to take the set 15-9.
Lawatsch finished with 16 kills and four blocks and freshman
Grant Levermore delivered 15 kills and three digs. Zyburt and Kraft each had 12 kills and senior setter
EJ Wells-Spicer totaled 55 assists and 11 digs. Wells-Spicer was named the tournament MVP.
In the Rivier match, freshman
Grant Levermore had eight kills and Zyburt and sophomore
Brody Cord each had six kills in the three-set sweep. Wells-Spicer had 24 assists and sophomore
Nick McDonagh added 12.
The Golden Flyers resume their United Volleyball Conference schedule Wednesday at Penn State Behrend at 7 p.m.
