Burke breaks record in 100 backstroke

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman Dan Burke broke his own school record twice Friday in the 100 backstroke as the Golden Flyers' men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued competition at the Upper New York State Championships at Ithaca's Acquatics Pavilion.

Burke swam in Friday evening's finals after posting a sixth-place time of :52.24 to improve upon his time of :52.58 that he swam at Ithaca in December. Burke improved his time once again in the finals to 51.77, putting him in sixth place. Another school record fell in the 800 free relay as senior Jacob Kline broke the 200 freestyle school record with a lead-off time of 1:45.46. Kline was joined by senior Michael Bidwell and freshmen Sean Doyle and Burke to produce an eighth-place finish in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:05.51.

Through 29 events the men are currently ranked in eighth place overall totaling 319 points. Stevens continues to hold the top spot (1180.5), Ithaca in second (938), Hartwick third (786.5), Union fourth (670), then Rensselaer (612), RIT (389), and Alfred (354).

In the women's meet, senior Carissa Risucci, Nazareth's All-American breaststroker, successfully defended her title in the 100 breaststroke as she broke her own school record in the finals with a winning time of 1:03.93. She finished more than a second ahead of runner-up Brittany Geyer of Stevens, who swam 1:05.10.

Sophomore Brittany Friedrich finished in sixth place with a time of 1:08.25 in the event finals. Freshman Nicole Charette (1:10.23) and junior Megan Wade (1:10.99) swam in the consolation finals after finishing 11th and 16th respectively. Charette finished in 16th place with a time of 1:11.10 and Wade finished in 14th place with a time of 1:10.87.

Senior McKenna Murphy finished seventh in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.27 in the finals. In the 100 backstroke, juniors Maura Reissig and Emily Sauter each made the finals after placing fifth and seventh respectively in the prelims with times of :59.00 and :59.32. Reissig placed seventh in the finals with a time of 58.77, and Sauter placed sixth with a time of 59.26. Nazareth also finished fifth in the 800 free relay (7:54.32) with the foursome of Reissig, Emma Dorschel, Amanda Rogers and Murphy.

The women are still in fourth place with a total of 608 points through 29 events. Stevens is in first (1041), Ithaca in second (1028.5) and Hartwick in third (761).
