Nazareth downs Medaille, 3-1

Gimello and Bunch combine for 28 kills

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman Billy Gimello and junior Brian Bunch tallied 18 kills and 10 kills respectively to help lead eighth-ranked Nazareth to a 3-1 (30-24, 36-38, 30-20, 30-26) victory over visiting 13th-ranked Medaille in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association match. Senior Frank Leahy also amassed a match-high 52 assists and added five kills, five aces, and five digs.

With the victory, the Golden Flyers improve to 5-2 overall while the Mavericks fall to 5-3 overall with the loss.

Senior Kelvin Rolle and sophomore Hans Schroeder each recorded nine digs for Nazareth while senior Joe Petzoldt finished with eight kills. Senior Chris DeHority tallied a match-high 10 digs while senior Ryan Johnsen finished with a match-high six blocks.

Medaille was led by Ryan Murdie, who tallied 27 kills on 41 attempts. Ryan Maxwell recorded a team-high 47 assists while Dan Jackson finished with a team-high eight digs. Andrew Nawotka also added 14 kills on 18 attempts for the Mavericks.

Nazareth controlled most of the action throughout the match thanks to its strong attack percentage. The Golden Flyers recorded percentages of .500, .415, and .500 in the first three sets respectively, before finishing with a .278 percentage in the fourth set. Nazareth held the Mavericks to percentages of .286, .350, .206, and .222 in the four sets. The Golden Flyers forced the Mavericks to win the third set 38-36 after Medaille held several set-point opportunities.

The Golden Flyers play at Hilbert and at SUNYIT in their next matches February 4th and 10th respectively. Nazareth returns home to host the Golden Flyer Invitational February 13th-14th.
