Kellen Gambeski recorded a match-high 21 kills on 26 attempts to lead fourth-ranked Nazareth to a three-game victory 30-26, 30-26, 30-19 over Eastern Mennonite. The victory improved Golden Flyers to 2-0 in the Nazareth Invitational and 10-2 overall.
In addition to Gambeski's kills, junior
Joe Petzoldt and senior
Tom Maving contributed 10 and nine kills respectively. Junior
Frank Leahy recorded a match-high 44 assists while junior
Chris DeHority recorded a team-high eight digs. Leahy, and juniors
Kelvin Rolle and
Ryan Johnsen each recorded three assisted blocks to frustrate the Royals' attack.
Ethan Fry and Calen Hochstetler led Eastern Mennonite with 17 and 10 kills respectively. Benjamin Yoder added a team-high 40 assists and a match-high nine digs while Elliott Warriner recorded seven digs.
In Nazareth's first match of the Invitational against visiting New Paltz, Nazareth received a match-high 19 kills from DeHority to defeat the Hawks in four games 28-30, 34-32, 30-28, 30-23. The Golden Flyers also received 13 kills from senior
Adam DiCicco.
Sophomore setter
Kevin Kirchhoff started the match for the Golden Flyers and recorded a team-high 34 assists while Leahy added 28 assists. Maving and freshman
Brian Bunch each contributed a team-high 13 digs. They were followed by DeHority and DiCicco with 11 and eight digs respectively.
Alexander Jackson and Mark Blair each had a team-high 15 kills for Hawks. Ryan Huberty added 14 kills and eight digs. Pedro Medina led New Paltz with 16 digs while Stephen Jackson recorded a team-high 44 assists.
The Golden Flyers continue the Nazareth Invitational Saturday against top-ranked UC-Santa Cruz at 10 a.m.
