Men’s Golf Sits in Second After Day One of Opening Weekend

CANTON, NY (nazathletics.com) – Nazareth's men's golf team traveled to Oliver D. Appleton Golf Club to take part in day one of the St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday. The Golden Flyers fielded 6 golfers and competed in a pool of 13 teams, and they managed to secure 2nd place (tied) through the opening 18 holes. Nazareth scored a combined team total of +2 on the day, putting them 7 strokes back from the lead, and even with Clarkson University (+2). Leading the event going into the second and final day are the hosting St. Lawrence University Saints, who carded a team score of -5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jason Clifton stood out in his Golden Flyer debut. The junior transfer student led his team with a score of 68 (-4) on day one, highlighted by 6 birdies split evenly between the front- and back-nine. He will enter the final round on Sunday in 2nd place individually, only 1 stroke back of the lead.
  • Senior and team captain Lincoln Crosby shot a 74 (+2), placing tied for 12th overall at the half-way point of the tournament and tied for 2nd on his team. Crosby closed out his round with a pair of birdies preceded by 4 straight pars, ending the day on a high note.
  • Sophomore Jaxstin Bingham was also tied as the 2nd-lowest scoring Golden Flyer through 18 holes, carding a 74 (+2) and sitting in a tie for 12th place overall alongside Crosby. He started the day with two bogeys before sinking 16 consecutive pars.
  • Sophomore Jack Fesetch rounded out the team-scoring group for Nazareth, carding a 77 (+5) highlighted by birdies on 8 and 18. He currently holds the 29th position on the individual leaderboard.
  • Joining the tie for 12th place overall and 2nd among Golden Flyers is freshman Daniel Meritt, who carded a 74 (+2) in an up-and-down round of golf that saw him pot 5 birdies.
  • Senior Charlie Calcagni finished his round with a score of 84 (+12), good for 70th overall. His best holes came on 5 and 18 where he managed birdies.
  • Sophomore Todd Wilson (IND) turned in a score of 79 (+7) through 18 holes. He finished the day strong, shooting one-under through the last 4 holes and building momentum he'll look to carry into Sunday's round. Wilson sits in 38th place.

The Golden Flyers will gear up for day two of the St. Lawrence Invitational on Sunday, where they'll have their eyes on an opening-weekend victory in Canton, New York.
