Men’s Lacrosse Take Down Sewanee

Box Score Sewanee, N.Y. (nazathletics.com) – The Nazareth men's lacrosse team took on the Sewanee Tigers on the road on Friday in an out-of-conference matchup. The Golden Flyers came out on top by a score of 11-6, winning their second consecutive game to improve their record to 2-6 on the season. Sewanee on the other hand, snapped a five-game winning streak and fell to 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was Sewanee who got off to a hot start, getting on the board just 35 seconds into the game and once again less than a minute later to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Nazareth scored a goal of their own shortly after courtesy of Matthew Farrington, but just 50 seconds later Sewanee would take a 3-1 lead. Nazareth turned up the pressure late in the quarter, led by Joey Hathorn who cut the deficit to one before leading scorer Kyle Rosenberger tied the game with just 10 seconds remaining.
  • The goal scoring continued in the second frame for Nazareth, who took their first lead of the game just 24 seconds in before adding two more to take a commanding 6-3 lead. The first two goals of the quarter were scored by Rosenberger, completing the early hat-trick. The Tigers managed to regain momentum late in the half, scoring two goals to pull the Golden Flyers back within reach.
  • The second half got started with a defensive battle. Both teams committed multiple turnovers, and the goaltenders had to be sharp, making 4 saves each in the third quarter. Nazareth failed to capitalize on the first extra-man opportunity of the game early in the period, but they made up for it with a goal shortly after to extend their lead to 7-5. The Golden Flyers continued to carry the play for the remainder of the quarter, but weren't able to separate themselves from Sewanee on the scoreboard.
  • Down by two with only 15 minutes of play remaining, Sewanee started the fourth quarter desperate. They took 6 shots in the first 6 minutes before finally breaking through Nazareth net minder Sven Habitzreuther, making it 7-6. The Golden Flyers were plagued with penalties in the final frame as well, finding themselves shorthanded for 30 seconds on 4 occasions. Still, Nazareth refused to relinquish the lead as they would go on to score 4 late goals including one where they were down a man. The Golden Flyers hung on to win by a score of 11-6.
